Salt of the Earth
This image is from a series using an 8×10 large-format view camera and paper negative. This process dates back to 1835 to Talbot’s Salt Print. I’m using a more modern version of the process. Brian had to sit very very still and he did receive a tan from the flash. Continue reading

It’s Her Fault
I’m a bit late with this one… we had to take the little one, pictured below, back to college on Friday. Still cute but not so little anymore. It’s all Courtney’s fault! I was really really happy photographing executives, stomping around factories, and photographing industrial parts in the studio. But then she came along and changed everything. When… Continue reading

5 Things to remember when picking a camera.
After last weeks post on getting your camera ready for the Holidays, I received a few questions on picking a new camera. The camera market has been in continuing turmoil ever since the iPhone was released. The industry has been shifting away from traditional Single Lens Reflex (SLR/DSLR) style cameras with moving mirrors and viewing prisms… Continue reading

Spray and Play.
Ok, so I took a big risk to get the shot. Nothing more dangerous than a little kid with a hose. I thought it was a great opportunity with Courtney spraying the hose with the sun backlighting the water spray. She touched her fingers in the stream and sprayed herself with a little water. Of… Continue reading

Sisters in Spirit
Certainly, they look like sisters, don’t they? But they are cousins. We sure have a heavy Nordic strain running through our family. This image is of Courtney and her cousin Charlotte from about 15 years ago. I’m fascinated by how we value family images over time. When I’m going through my family images just after taking them,… Continue reading

I’m getting the hang of this
I love it when friends come into town…. I get to abuse them. Brian stopped down from the north side to try out Orland’s finest cuisine. I love to get together and chat business and family. This time it was more about family, we have kids about the same age that getting back to school.… Continue reading

My baby’s back!!!
No my kids didn’t go anywhere. I got my baby back from her second overhaul and I have to say that there is something really wonderful about shooting film with a completely manual camera. 27 years old and she works like she was new. I have to say that I do love the… Continue reading

The Paper Neg is Back
More playing with paper negs…. the texture in the photo is from the paper fibers in the negative. Still working on getting the wet plate going… its just taking time with the crazy summer schedule. Continue reading

Fun with the Old
My brother-in-law, Jon, was in town a few weeks ago, and I asked if he would sit for a portrait with my big camera. He, honestly, didn’t have a choice if he wanted to get to the airport on time… I’m having fun with the slower pace that the large format requires to produce an… Continue reading

I stand still or move slowly, feeling things like the impulse of shapes, the direction of lines, the quality of surfaces. I frame with my eye (sometimes with my hands) as the ground glass would frame. Nothing that one could reasonably call thinking is taking place at this stage. The condition is total absorption; the decision (a picture!) is spontaneous. – Aaron Siskind, 1955
