LaPort Baskeet

We had an opportunity to travel to LaPorte, Indiana, to see the Long Island Lutheran high school basketball team from New York play in a tournament. This was the school that Elise went to for her early grades, and her father was the Headmaster and, more importantly, Basketball Coach.

The tournament was held at The Civic Auditorium, an absolutely beautiful and well-maintained 1930s auditorium in the heart of a residential neighborhood in LaPorte, Indiana. I love investigating these types of buildings; they are so fun to see. It was also fun to see the house full, and excited to see the game.

I remember being at a digital tech workshop in the late 90s, and one of the presenters, an established commercial photographer, recommended that the best way to use your digital camera was to tape over the LCD screen with card stock and not review any images until you get home. I might try that. However, I noticed today that Kodak Tri-X has dropped in price from over $12 a roll to under $9. Maybe I should shortcut the adjustment and shoot some film

I stand still or move slowly, feeling things like the impulse of shapes, the direction of lines, the quality of surfaces. I frame with my eye (sometimes with my hands) as the ground glass would frame. Nothing that one could reasonably call thinking is taking place at this stage. The condition is total absorption; the decision (a picture!) is spontaneous. – Aaron Siskind, 1955
